Founded 1998, 1&1 was founded in Germany and is ultimately owned by a German company.

1&1 has recently opened a fourth £15 million data centre built to the company’s own specification. 1&1 owns and manages the data centres. The company has a 130 Gigabyte backbone connection and handles 1,000 terabytes of web traffic every month.

We have been with 1&1 Internet for approx 6 years (not because they are good - in fact they are dreadfull). The problem is that once you set everything up (we have 35 websites) it is difficult to move. Over this period, we have had numerous issues and have even reported them to Trading Standards and threatened legal proceeding on a few occasions. The most recent issue resolves around our trying to cancel a domain. Prior to its renewal, I personally phoned 1&1 (who charge 6p per minute + operator costs) and explained that we would be cancelling the domain. We cancelled it online and were then billed for the next 2years. we disputed this and 1&1 staff lied to us on numerous occasions, never looked into the case and even said that they could not deal with it because the issue (7.18p) had been passed to debt collectors. I called the debt collectors and they knew nothing about this. Our payments to 1&1 were via Paypal so we simply appealed stating that !&1 had no right to take money because we had expressly forbade them from doing so for that particular domain. Paypal refunded our payment, but we then went through the same scenario numerous times and they even tried toi take money from our card (which we blocked) even though they had eventually conceded our case and issued a credit note for the full amount. If you are looking for a decent Hosting company - for the love of God - look elsewhere (we are).

Useless! They can do the basics but their customer service is very patchy so it's ok until something goes wrong.When I couldn't pay an unpaid invoice due to a 500 server error when logging in to their own website, they locked my email account. Despite calls and email from me to them - they couldn't take my payment over the phone to prevent the account being locked and even though I told them about the error they locked it anyway.I'm thinking of leaving this company now as soon as I can transfer my domain for my email address.

We used to host our company website with unlimitedgb.com, a hosting provider from India, and support was horrible. In early 2010, we moved it to 1and1 and while this isn't the best host so far, it's way better than unlimitedgb. We may move our site to Heart Internet though.

I am beyond frustration with this company. I have been using 1 and 1 for several years, but the real problems started when we set up one of their ecommerce shops. The customer support for these shops is a total disaster. I would say joke, but it has cost us hundreds in phone bills to get ABSOLUTELY NOWHERE. I can stay on the phone for 45 minutes while the support person leaves me on hold to go and 'check' something, i.e. they haven't a clue how to solve the problem. I've lost count of the number of times I have hung up on them. When they do eventually concede that they can't solve the problem they say they will 'escalate' the matter to their 'specialist support people'. An even bigger joke. If they do bother to respond, it's just with emails asking question after question. I think they all have the same training - give the customer the runaround for long enough, they will just get fed up and go away. I wouldn't mind if the problems were caused by my own lack of knowledge, but they are not. If the shop templates were so easy and reliable, why then can't the customer service people fix the problems I raise? Where is their technical knowledge. I've had enough now and I intend to do something about them by whatever means I can, including Twitter, Watchdog, etc. They are impacting on our business. The only thing they seem capable of getting right is their ability to take money out of our bank account on a regular basis. Their cancellation process is also disgusting. They make it so difficult for people to cancel anything and they also refuse to cancel anything immediately.
