Preventing Email Issues

When you are in the process of having your web site made, there are times when you will like to build in a way for people to communicate with you. You may want this communication to build your marketing list, have a list for newsletters, or just plain communication with visitors to your site.  This all sounds fine and well, but this is where some problems can happen.

One of the biggest problems that can happen with this is that you make yourself susceptible to viruses.  There has been a lot of progress made here, but you can still be at the hands of the hackers that get their jollies by messing up your site.

Most of the viruses travel through e-mail attachments. This is most likely where that constant advice everyone always gives you about never opening an attachment from someone you do not know.  The advice has now progressed to do not open an unexpected attachment.  There are now safeguards in place for this and your level of concern can now be diminished.

The major concern when it comes to e-mail now is spam, this has become, as I am sure you are aware, the number one annoyance in the internet mail system. There are now estimates from many different professional sources that the mail we receive is in the ballpark of about 90%.  There is a whole variety of definitions of what spam is, but overall, it is unwanted and unsolicited mail, usually in the form of some kind of advertisement.

In spite of laws and stiff penalties we still get spam. This usually is some form of advertisement for work at home or something to make you young. The other spam that seems quite common today is the spam with offensive adult material linked to it somehow.   We all deal with having to go through our mail every day and sort out the garbage so we can get to our real mail that we want to read.   As long as that small amount of people open their spam and the spammers get some kind of feedback, they will continue to spam, no matter what the criminal penalties are.

For web site owners, this can be a real problem. When the spam content causes the mechanisms that send out or receive messages from valid visitors, this is a real problem.   This problem can be a time consuming fix, the web site owner may have to track down the spammer and find out who they are before they can contact an administrator and get his site taken off the blacklist for spamming.

E-mail is a very important part of internet communications, and when the system goes on the blink, there is usually someone who has to track it down and fix it, like they did not have enough to do already.

So when you are looking for a web hosting company, I would advise one that has few e-mail problems and when they do, they have a reputation of fixing it quickly.
